Cult and Classic Science-Fiction and Fantasy - page 2

Space: 1999 from Gerry Anderson

A group of humans find themselves trapped on the Moon as it spins out of the Earth's orbit.
Another real action series from the talent of Gerry Anderson. Space: 1999 was often portrayed as a dark vision of the future. While the first series was generally seen as fairly upbeat with disaster-movie type plotlines, the second series was much darker and prone to Anderson's wanderings in the realm of psychological drama with encountered aliens more likely to attack with mind blasts than laser blasts. All in all a compelling series. Anderson's fantastic model-making team get used to the full with the moonbase itself and space vehicles and of course terrific explosions reminiscent of Supermarionation at its best.

Star Trek

Star Trek has been around for as long as most of us have. The original Gene Roddenberry series from the sixties has been re-run time and time again and remains utterly watchable for its storylines, great casting and characters.
No one thought the original could be surpassed but with the advent of Star Trek: The Next Generation many thought this had actually happened (although there are two firm camps of opinion on this!). TNG benefited from fantastic writing, big budgets and, as with the original, convincing characters and perfect casting. It was able to develop the characters' inter-relationships throughout its seven seasons to leave us with a firmly knitted crew you really cared about.
The success of the Star Trek franchise brought more spin-off series: Deep Space Nine ran alongside the tail of TNG with characters from one appearing in the other. Star Trek Voyager followed soon after and now we have Star Trek Enterprise. Enterprise takes us back to a time before the original series when warp space flight is in its infancy - the series follows the adventures of the first ship named Enterprise.
Star Trek is the daddy of them all. If you don't like Star Trek, you don't like sci-fi.

Star Wars

George Lucas has never hidden the fact that he was inspired by some of the great classics of fantasy adventure when he created the classic "Star Wars" universe. In an introduction to a story synopsis dated May 1, 1975, he refers to his story as being "in the grand tradition of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars and Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon."
The release in 1977 of Star Wars episode IV: A New Hope, rekindled the public's love affair with science fiction and spawned a host of new and revamped series and heroes such as Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon. The subsequent release of episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and episode VI: Return of the Jedi moved Sci-Fi firmly to the front of mainstream entertainment to the delight of fans everywhere.

UFO from Gerry Anderson

Legendary sci-fi producer Gerry Anderson - the mastermind behind such cult favorites as Thunderbirds and Space: 1999 - created his first live-action television series with this rarely seen science-fiction gem. Set in a then-futuristic 1980, UFO follows the adventures of S.H.A.D.O., a secret agency that must fight the evil aliens who infiltrate Earth and harvest the organs of humans.
Dark, psychological and compelling storylines, a strong cast and innovative special effects made this an excellent series much admired by cult afficionados.

Book of the series

X-Files

On the air since September 1993, the X-Files traces the adventures of FBI Agents Fox Mulder (Davis Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson). He is a "believer" in the paranormal. She is a medical doctor who believes only in cold hard scientific fact. Together they've been assigned to "The X-Files", a division exploring all the "strange" cases that fall to the FBI.
The show is thought provoking and intelligent and is a haven for those of us who love and/or believe in government conspiracy theories.
