| Cadfael
based on the novels of Ellis Peters |
Brother
Cadfael, the medieval mystery-solving monk, is a fascinating
detective, at once a man of God, of science, and even of action.
Derek Jacobi stars as the former "soldier, sailor, sinner,
and Crusader" who has his faith tested by crimes of royal
intrigue and baffling murders that seem to plague 12th-century
Shrewsbury.
Each feature-length episode is self-contained but plays against
the backdrop of England's civil war between forces loyal to
King Stephen and those to Empress Maud. Eoin McCarthy co-stars
as local Under-Sheriff Hugh Beringar, who relies on Cadfael
when murder subverts his efforts to keep the peace.

| Cagney
and Lacey |
Two
female police detectives cooperate with each other both in
their professions and in their personal lives.
As was the growing trend in the shows of the 80s, much greater
emphasis was placed on character relationships - none did
this to such effect as Cagney and Lacey where personal problems
often took centre stage with police activities sometimes relegated
to a supporting role.

| Charlie's
Angels |
Back
in the late 1970s Charlie's Angels was wildly popular television
at its most self-consciously banal. The jiggly, joggly jolly
first series' three (and best-remembered) belles--lioness
Farrah Fawcett (then Farrah Fawcett-Majors), pin-up babe Jaclyn
Smith and thinking man's beauty Kate Jackson--were something
like primetime Spice Girls, gracing countless magazine covers
and bestselling posters.
The three leading characters were bored policewomen wooed
away to a private firm owned and operated by the unseen Charlie.
After a long set-up each week, the girls' investigations typically
saw them going undercover as fashion models, nurses, roller-derby
stars, vulnerable convicts etc. etc.

| Columbo |
Peter
Falk's rumpled and infallible Lt. Columbo. Viewers were quickly
won over by Falk's shrewd performance as he matched wits with
a host of exceptional guest stars (including Gene Barry, Patrick
McGoohan, and others), all of whom assumed that the disheveled
detective would never figure out their "perfect crimes";
the popularity and quality of the original series allows Falk
to continue to don the trenchcoat some 30 years later for
occasional Columbo TV movies.

| Cracker |
First
screened in 1993, Jimmy McGovern's Cracker was at once a variation
on a familiar theme and a daring new departure from the run-of-the-mill
cop show. Robbie Coltrane's Fitz is an independent criminal
psychologist called in by the police to help them crack intractable
cases, usually involving grisly serial murders. But like its
Granada TV stablemate Prime Suspect, Cracker also delves deep
into the main characters' personal lives, revealing a chaos
of emotional entanglements that become increasingly inseparable
from their professional duties.
Robbie Coltrane's charismatic presence dominates: the contrast
between Fitz's professionalism and his complete inability
to diagnose his own psychological failings provides much of
the show's dramatic impetus. His frequent interrogations of
murder suspects are tour de force demonstrations of coolly
analytical method shot through with biting humour. But his
drunken, intemperate behaviour towards his wife and everyone
else is a telling contrast of extremes, and one that creates
dangerous resentment among his colleagues.

| Inspector
Morse |
When
Inspector Morse first appeared on television in 1987, nobody
could have predicted that it would run into the next century,
maintaining throughout a quality of scripts and storylines
that raised the genre of the detective series to a new level.
Much of its success can be attributed to John Thaw's total
immersion in the role.
At the heart of Morse's professional life is his awkward partnership
with Detective Sergeant Lewis (Kevin Whately), the resolutely
ordinary, worldly sidekick who manages to keep his boss in
an almost permanent state of exasperation while retaining
his grudging respect.
Morse's investigations do occasionally take him abroad to
more exotic locations, but throughout 14 successful years
of often gruesome murders, the city of Oxford itself became
a central character in these brooding two-hour dramas.

| Jonathan
Creek |
Jonathan
Creek (Alan Davies) is a master of illusion. Deviser of magic,
creator of miracles, Jonathan creates spectacular stage stunts
from his home – a mysterious windmill in the heart of
the country. His brilliant analytical mind penetrates the
darkest corners and cracks the trickiest of puzzles. But no
showman, he lurks backstage while his boss Adam Faust steps
in the limelight. Then Jonathan meets unorthodox crime journalist
Maddy Magellan (Caroline Quentin), who soon discovers another
use for his extraordinary talent – solving murder by
magic. The hottest partnership since Mulder and Scully, Jonathan
and Maddy investigate crimes which seem to have no rational
explanation. He is a bit of a nerd but he also a bit of a
quick-witted genius. Maddy Magellan is an investigative crime
writer, and the pair join forces to solve seemingly impossible
crimes.
Series 4 saw the introduction of Carla Borrego (Julia Sawalha)
as Creek's new foil after Caroline Quentin's departure from
the show.

| Kojak |
Lt.
Theo Kojak (Telly Savalas) is the main character in this popular
television police drama. Kojak is a tough cop, but his trademark
is a fondness for lollipops.
Kojak is one of those shows that left its mark on those priviledged
to watch it in the early 70s. The show had a host of well
defined characters in the NYPD and the plots were well written,
intense and very well acted.

| Magnum
PI |
After
it first screened in 1980, Magnum quickly became a hit, thanks
to the combination of smart and witty scripting, gorgeous
locations, and the considerable charm of lead Tom Selleck
as former Naval Intelligence officer Thomas Magnum, who gives
up his position to become a private investigator on Oahu with
the help of fellow Vietnam vets T.C. (Roger E. Mosley) and
Rick (Larry Manetti). Magnum also provided security for the
lavish estate of wealthy (and never-seen) mystery writer Robin
Masters, which gave him access to the author's expensive vehicles
(including a prized Ferrari), much to the disapproval of Masters'
manservant Higgins (Jonathan Hillerman).
