Hellraiser

Clive Barker's directing debut graphically depicts the tale of a man and wife who move into an old house and discover a hideous creature - the man's half-brother, who is also the woman's former lover - hiding upstairs. Having lost his earthly body to a trio of S&M demons, the Cenobites, he is brought back into existence by a drop of blood on the floor. And the sequels ensue...
The first three Hellraiser movies (the only three that Clive Barker really had any part in the making of) are all excellent films and one has to wonder at Barker's imagination.

Nightmare on Elm Street

A hellish monster enters people's dreams and systematically butchers them in their sleep. So starts the series of films starring the anti-hero Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund). Directed by Wes Craven and heavily influenced by his strange imagination. Craven claimed to have drawn inspiration for the movie from a series of news stories that involved a group of young Samoans who died from a horrific nightmare. The story goes first these young, healthy people would have a nightmare, refuse to sleep for as long as they could, then when they finally fell asleep from sheer exhaustion they awoke with a scream, and died from a heart failure. Craven also claimed to have named Freddy Krueger after a kid who bullied him in school and to have based his appearance on a disfigured hobo who scared him as a youth.

Omen

In 1976 The Omen scored a hit with critics and audiences hungry for more after The Exorcist with its mixture of Gothic horror and mystery and its plot about a young boy suspected of being the personification of the anti-Christ. Directed by Richard Donner (best known for his Superman and Lethal Weapon films), The Omen gained a lot of credibility from the casting of Gregory Peck and Lee Remick as a distinguished American couple living in England, whose young son Damien bears "the mark of the beast". At a time when graphic gore had yet to dominate the horror genre, this film used its violence discreetly and to great effect and the mood of dread and potential death is masterfully maintained.
Damien: Omen II takes place several years after the mysterious events of the first film - the now teenaged and militarily enrolled Damien Thorne is slowly being made aware of his unholy heritage and horrific destiny.
The series concludes with The Omen III: The Final Conflict, starring Sam Neill as the adult Damien--aka the son of Satan--in a battle with the heavens for control of mankind.
There are two trilogy box sets featured here - the first was released in 2001 while the second was released in 2004 with many more special features.

Zombies!

George A. Romero's Dead Trilogy is the best known of the genre. Cheesy and gory they set the standard for Zombie films. Some films were so bad they were funny - with clay-like flesh and buckets of unconvincing blood cast liberally over the screaming cast with the whole effect remisniscent of slapstick comedies. Bloody great all the same.
Recent Zombie films have tried to introduce a touch of 'realism', if that's in any way an appropriate term, which was lacking in earlier incarnations; people are chased and caught by zombies who move fast, as opposed to being chased and caught by zombies who move at the speed of arthritic 80-year olds. With budgets being higher, special effects tend to look more convincing too.
